Completion of a technical assistance twinning project to the Montenegro (AFCOS) Anti-Fraud Office by the NTA to ensure effective protection of the EU's financial interests.
The NTA in cooperation with the Centre of International European Economic Law has successfully completed an 8-month technical assistance project aimed at strengthening the AFCOS Office of Montenegro in the field of the fight against fraud.
In the framework of the twinning project, the NTA implemented a series of targeted actions such as:
- Empowerment of AFCOS Office staff in the reporting of irregularities and the use the IMS system
- Development of the AFCOS Network to identify cases of fraud, corruption or other illegal activities
- Evaluation of the Montenegro National Anti-Fraud Strategy for the reporting period (2019-2022), detailing the strengths and weaknesses as they emerged during the implementation while making a set of proposals for the design of the next Strategic Framework for the period 2024-2027.
In the project implementation, the NTA cooperated with experts from the Financial Audit Committee (EDEL) and the General Directorate of Financial and Economic Crime Unit.
The programme’s results were presented at a special event held on 15 September 2023 in Podgorica (Montenegro) with the participation of the European Commission representatives, the Montenegro Minister of Economy, Greek diplomats and public administration officials of both countries. All participants expressed their satisfaction with the achievement of the project objectives and praised the high-added value of the deliverables for upgrading the operational capacity of the national mechanism for prevention and detection of irregularities and fraud phenomena.
