The NTA Governor, Mr. Angelos Binis, was elected on Wednesday 5 January 2022 as a full member of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA) Executive Committee, which brings together the Heads of equivalent bodies from 140 countries. It is the first time that Greece has been appointed to the Executive Committee of the largest association of anti-corruption authorities and agencies worldwide.
The International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities has as its main priorities the promotion of the implementation of the United Nations’ Convention against Corruption on the one hand, and the provision of advisory and technical support to national anti-corruption authorities and bodies on the other. The 15-member Executive Committee of the Association is elected by the General Assembly of members and consists of the President, four Vice-Presidents and ten members with a three-year term of office. Mr. Simon Peh, Commissioner of the Hong Kong Independent Commission against Corruption, was elected Chairman of the Association. The Executive Committee includes representatives of authorities and anti-corruption prevention and anti-corruption agencies from countries such as France, South Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, Chile, among others.
In the context of the first meeting of the Executive Committee, Mr. Binis stressed the importance of supporting the Anti-Corruption Authorities with specific policies that have proven effective in practice and which are appropriate to the social, political and administrative context of each State. This alliance is expected to have a multi-level positive impact in strengthening integrity and transparency at a time when the global community is facing the challenges of an unprecedented pandemic. Mr. Binis highlighted the NTA’s staff commitment in promoting the objectives of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities over the next three years.
