The National Transparency Authority (ΝΤΑ) as the successor of five main public Auditing Bodies, including the Inspector General of Public Administration, is responsible for conducting financial supervision and audits of all sports bodies that receive a General Secretariat of Sports grant, if the amount of the grant exceeds 50.000,00 €.
In the context of carrying out this responsibility, the ΝΤΑ immediately proceeded to prioritise audits, based on a risk analysis, so that the selection of entities to be audited, in the first phase, would be based on standards and criteria defined by international auditing practice. The whole process (seeking financial data from the audited bodies, elaboration of the criteria of the risk analysis, processing of the data and scoring of the bodies, classification of these bodies into prioritisation categories) was completed in a very short time by the Authority’s staff and the Authority’s Governor has already issued an Audit Order for the four sports bodies which, according to the risk analysis, had the highest risk degree. These bodies are:
- Greek Volleyball Federation
- Greek Basketball Federation
- National Sports Centres of Thessaloniki
- Pampeloponnesian National Sports Centre of Patras
The audit aims to provide assurance on the emergence of mismanagement and corruption and at the same time to improve the financial management procedures of the audited bodies by providing specific proposals-recommendations, which will help sports bodies in the better use of available resources and staff.
The audits will continue, always based on the current institutional framework and the principles and methods of international auditing practice.
