Following a complaint, the National Transparency Authority (NTA) conducted an audit at a municipality of Attica. During the audit, it was found that a specific private company, engaged in the operation of football fields on privately leased land, had illegally occupied approximately five acres of the municipality's public green space. The company had fenced the land, developed football fields, and constructed unauthorised facilities, including changing rooms, sanitary facilities, and an office. In addition, an unlicensed food and beverage outlet was operating, selling drinks, refreshments, and food.
Furthermore, the company had not obtained a valid operating license and had been commercially exploiting these public spaces for an extended period, dating back prior to 2007. It had been deriving financial benefit without paying any public space usage fees or rental fees to the Municipality, with the exception of a very brief period of approximately two years.
Following the audit by the NTA, the company was evicted from the public spaces in question, and the Urban Planning Authority imposed fines for the unauthorised constructions.
The NTA's investigation also recommended disciplinary action against elected officials and municipal employees for their actions and omissions related to the aforementioned incidents. The NTA's report has also been submitted to the relevant Public Prosecutor, and criminal proceedings are currently underway against both elected officials and municipal employees.
