Greece has demonstrated a high degree of compliance by implementing 85% of the recommendations made by the Council of Europe's Group of States against Corruption (GRECO). This is the main conclusion of the Addendum published (01.06.2022) and part of the 2nd Compliance Report on the implementation of the recommendations in the 4th GRECO Evaluation Cycle for Greece on "Prevention of Corruption of Parliamentarians, Judges and Prosecutors". The report notes that 85% of the recommendations have been satisfactorily implemented or partially implemented by our country, while 15% of them have not yet been adopted.
A particularly positive development is the finding that Greece has significantly improved the regulatory framework for the criminal accountability of serving and former members of the government and parliamentarians, limiting the ability of the Parliament to refuse prosecution requests for waiver of immunity only in cases directly related to the exercise of parliamentary duties.
At the same time, the text of the Report positively assesses the country's recent legislative initiatives to introduce an obligation to prepare a regulatory impact report for all draft laws and the establishment of the new Judicial Statistics Service of the Ministry of Justice.
In the same context, the recent Report of the Enhanced Oversight Mechanism acknowledges the significant progress made by Greece in implementing the last three recommendations of the 4th GRECO Evaluation Cycle that remain open. It is noted that these recommendations have already been incorporated into the Greek legal order following the adoption by the Greek Parliament (02.06.2022) of the new Code on the Organisation of Courts and the Status of Judicial Officers.
GREGO's report is added to a series of positive assessments made by international and European organizations, which highlight the improved image of our country in the field of anti-corruption, while at the same time recognizing the effective work of the Judicial Authority and its decisive contribution to this national effort.
